Which motivation style works better? The positive style or the negative style?

Motivation proved to have paved the path that leads to the development of the workforce. If you want to influence your employees, being bossy is no more the trend, but being polite to create a friendly atmosphere gives room to perceive a better understanding. When you motivate your workforce, they will be uplifted to perform better. But how do you motive, is the question superiors fail to answer. It is important for superiors to understand the motivational theories and employ the rightly applicable style to motive the subordinates. It is not true that motivation is always a downward channelized mechanism. Motivation can also be channelized upwards when subordinates convey a strong feedback message that upraises the superiors performance.

Many researchers have given various theories that revitalize motivation. The two simple styles are positive motivation and negative motivation.

  1. Positive Motivation: It is a motivational style that encourages others with a constructive feedback. In the business world, this style incorporates monetary and non-monetary incentives. With an anticipation to earn better incentives, the workforce amplify their effort to a productive scale. With promises to promotions, superiors motive the subordinates to reach the efficient performance on the appraising scale. People work better when they are encouraged. Appreciation is the another key to scale up the performance of others. Instigating better work, people allow the scope to perform better when they are appreciated for they do.
  2. Negative Motivation: It is the motivational style that puts the others in jeopardy. It is because of threat and insecurity that people work according to this theory. Hence the style is called negative motivation. Here the oxymoron negative motivation is used as this style, though is of a negative approach, ensures that things are accomplished within the deadlines. It is not quite a good style to be employed as it kills the creativity among people and extracts the puppet performance out of them. It is not suggested to be considered unless it is the last resort that can act as the deciding factor to the continuity of the employee at work.

In this modern world with a wide scope of opportunities, people will not last long under your employment if they are ill-treated. It is when they develop a sense of belongingness that they start working for a better understanding. Positive motivation is the best way to inculcate a consistent quality performance among the personnel. Sometimes, due to the scope for lenience in this style, people tend to take advantage of the positivity. Only under such circumstances can negative motivation be employed to keep the disciple of the employees in check. Both of these styles must be proportionally incorporated with a maximum positive motivation to buffer the minimum discipline-ensuring negative motivation. More or less, it is the positive motivational style that people accept in this evolved generation. So be positive and give room to the best quality performance of every human resource!
