The Effect of Coercion in Management

True leadership makes millions of followers aspire to become such leaders. It is the motivation leaders give that inspires people. Superiors have the responsibility to ensure a right culture in the company. There has to be a proper method that is to be employed to get things done through someone. Management is the art of getting things done through people but this art is not to be used as an opportunity to exploit someone against their wishes. The very concept of exploitation is at false. Human resource is to be utilised, not exploited. Coercion is a persuasive technique that is used to get things done through someone using force and threat. It is a style of motivation that kills creativity and black the true potential from being projected. The effect of coercion is a negative one. It acts as a barrier that stands against the liberty of people, against exhibiting actual potential and against a healthy relationship between the superior and the subordinate.

A. Suppression of potential: When people are subjected to threat, they will not portrait their true self but will instead fall into the defensive mode of action. They will tend to play safe to escape from the threatening circumstance. It is an obligatory step leaders should take to avoid such misconception of personalities. Leaders must create an environment that will encourage people to prove who they are. Getting things done through positive motivation technique is the best way to earn the trust of people and bring out the best in them.

B. Loss of liberty: Right to liberty is a gift to everyone. The freedom of choice is a right people have. When leaders are coercive, there is a danger of bondage to the subordinates. It is when people are given due freedom to choose what they want, they will perform better. Leaders must not threaten people to get things done but should creatively allow them to enjoy their freedom of choice while they are wisely persuaded to get the job done. It is in the hands of the leader whether he wants to approach people in a negative direction or persuade them showing what benefit would they have in doing it so.

C. Counter activity: When leaders are coercive, subordinates tend to act counter to the interests of the leader. This creates a negative climate in the complaint disturbing the decorum of the firm. People will not be subjective to the atmosphere in the organisation rather they will try to work against the leader. This lack of harmony will effect the team spirit and ruin the objectives of team work in the organisation. It is an important job of a leader to ensure that there will be no activity behind the company that puts the reputation of the organisation at stake. A man is valued by what others say of him is a proverb that is very much applicable to leaders. Leaders must be of a personality that people must talk about the inspiring character.

Leaders who exclude coercion in their persuasion styles will have a greater scope of being better managers. This is what the leaders should work for. Creating and maintaining a positive environment that attracts good motivation is what a leader must adhere to, to become an effective manager.
